- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS -

Question 1. Will my video picture quality be degraded or compromised from the normal camera video?

Answer: No! The specific number of lines of resolution of the Remote Video Head is 380. The practical result is that the viewer will not be able to see a difference between back-to-back shots taken with the normal camera record mode and the RVH. The only compromise will be an occasional slight color shift which is hardly noticable. This is due to the automatic white balance feature which enables the RVH to be so tiny. In hundreds of commercial videos delivered to satisfied customers, not one client or observer has ever commented negatively about the picture quality.

Question 2. I've seen or heard about similar small helmet cameras which are a lot cheaper. Why shouldn't I buy one of those instead of SportsCam?

Answer: If price is your only deciding factor, you should. However, if you make a fair comparison of picture quality, system features, sound quality, reliability, and ease of use, you will find that SportsCam excels in each category.

Question 3 [Skydiving]. I've made hundreds of skydives with my helmet-mounted camera and never had a problem or an injury. Why should I change to a SportsCam System?

Answer: Many skydivers have never had a malfunction or accident. But all it takes is one incident to cause an injury or fatality. SportsCam is one more innovation to help reduce the chance of accidents. Plus, being comfortable and safe while shooting video makes it a lot more fun.

Question 4 [Skydiving]. Is the SportsCam System really safer?

Answer: Yes! This was the main reason for the development of the SportsCam Video System originally for skydiving. The weight of the Remote Video Head and it's mount is neglegible. This eliminates all the danger of whiplash injuries during hard parachute openings or high-G forces in other sports. In addition, the enormous reduction of bulk and profile of the RVH greatly reduces the danger of equipment entanglement and related malfunctions and/or fatalities. Skydiving with the SportsCam System is like jumping without a camera. And these safety features of less weight and bulk apply to all other extreme sports as well.

Question 5. Will the SportsCam System work with any video camera?

Answer: No! The SportsCam System works only with SONY video camcorders -- specifically, only ones which have a "LANC" jack and a "Record" function in the VCR (or playback) mode. Obviously, the camera also needs to be small enough to fit inside the Camera Body Pouch. SportsCam works with most of the Sony HC MiniDV models. See the list of cameras on the "General Information" page. None of the Sony Hi8 or Digital 8 camcorders are compatible.

Question 6. Does the SportsCam System include a video camera?

Answer: Normally no - but check for special offers for a FREE camcorder. There are many models and prices from which to choose and since many potential buyers already own a camera, we do NOT include one. For similar reasons we also do NOT include a helmet or a Newton ringsight. We offer either the Brent Concentric or Cross Ringsight as an additional support product for helmet mounted systems. Note that the Cross Ringsight is cheaper but the Concentric is considered superior.

Question 7. Do I have to use a MiniDV camcorder?

Answer: The MiniDV camcorder is the most convenient and reliable camera for SportsCam. However we now offer a system for the Sony DVD camcorders on a limited basis - please email for details. Currently the Sony HC96 is the MiniDV camera of choice but many older models work just as well. See the list of camera models on the "General Information" page.

Question 8. I would prefer to stow the Sony camcorder inside my jumpsuit or clothing rather than in the pouch. Do I really need the pouch?

Answer: Yes. Remember the SportsCam is a system and systems need every element to function properly. The Camera Body Pouch contains the control cables, indicator lights, and the main control button as well as the mini-microphone and the 12 volt battery for the Remote Video Head. Keep in mind that one of the main features of the SportsCam System is that it re-positions the camcorder from the head where it is dangerous to your body where it is not dangerous. Also, the Camera Body Pouch is placed outside the jumpsuit at the waist for a reason. That is the most convenient place from which to turn the camcorder on and off and be able to see the LED indicator lights. You can also check that there is a picture on the monitor by seeing it in the pouch view window. If you absolutely need your camera inside your jumpsuit or clothing, you will still need the Camera Body Pouch but you will lose the convenience of turning the system on and off at will.

Question 9 [Skydiving]. What about still photos? Many skydive tandem operations require stills as well as video.

Answer: If your Sony camera has a built-in memory stick you could capture still frames from your tape. There are fairly cheap printers available that can print right from a memory stick without the need of a computer. Note that there IS a picture quality compromise due to the inherent pixel limitations of the video tape from which still frames are selected. However, this is offset by being able to offer instant photos with the client having no additional time or cost of taking negatives to a photo lab. And the big advantage to the videographer is NOT having to wear an additional still camera mounted on the helmet. Of course you should not use this option if you or the client want enlargements larger than 4X6. Note that many of the photos on this website are taken from SportsCam video frames.

Question 10 [Skydiving]. Will SportsCam change the way I fly in freefall?

Answer: Yes! There will be no camera weight or wind resistance on your head and neck which will allow you to maximize your optimum potential in freefall. In addition, you will not have to think or worry about getting set up for opening shock to avoid neck injury. Naturally, these advantages apply to other extreme sports as well.

Question 11 [Skydiving]. I already do freefall photography. Will SportsCam improve my video skills?

Answer: It should. Freedom from equipment worries should enable you to fly more relaxed and expend more concentration on composition rather than hardware.

Question 12 [Skydiving]. I've never shot video in freefall before -- will SportsCam make me into a top freefall videographer?

Answer: No! SportsCam will simply make freefall videography easier, safer, and more enjoyable. Becoming an expert or professional in any endevor is a matter of dedication, training, and experience. But freedom from neck related injuries will allow many more individuals to become more experienced in videography and allow many experienced cameramen to enjoy their skills over a longer period of time.

Question 13. If I buy or test a SportsCam, will I ever want to return to a helmet mounted camera?

Answer: NO!
